Caramel Bulletproof Coffee

Rich, buttery caramel-y coffee is the most delicious way to start your day or for when you're looking for a tasty way to support your fast or staying in ketosis. The secret ingredient in this decadent and creamy coffee is the brown butter ghee, it is honestly to die for!

Full of good for you fats, this Paleo and Whole30 bulletproof coffee is a great way to stay in ketosis while fueling your body on a keto diet or as a healthy and low carb option to support healthy blood sugars! This is one of my go-to's when I am fasting and am looking for a little something to keep me going until I reach my goal.



 

Benefits of Ghee and MCT Oil


Most bulletproof coffees are made with grass-fed butter and some version of an MCT (medium-chain triglyceride) oil. I chose to use ghee and specifically C8 MCT oil for their health benefits and to keep this caramel bulletproof coffee Paleo and Whole30 friendly.


Benefits of Ghee from Grass-fed butter

  • Nutrient Dense: Grass-fed cows are healthier cows and their beef and butter are more nutrient dense since they are eating their natural diet.

  • Vitamin A: Grass-fed butter is high in beta-carotene which is converted to vitamin A in the body. Vitamin A is a fat soluble vitamin that is necessary in eye health, cellular division, and immune health [1].

  • Vitamin K: Vitamin K is essential in bone health and it is converted to vitamin K2 by our gut microbiome, which supports our heart health!

  • Higher in unsaturated fatty acids [2]

  • Higher in Omega-3's: support anti-inflammation pathways.

  • Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA): Grass-fed butter has been show to have a much higher concentration of CLA than butter from grain-fed cows. CLA's contain Omega-6 fatty acids that are converted in the body to arachidonic acid, the building block used to support inflammatory and anti-inflammatory pathways [3].

  • Butyrate: An essential short-chain fatty acid that is key to gut health, lowers inflammation, and has antioxidant properties.

Benefits of MCT oil

  • Excellent source of energy. MCT oil is quickly absorbed into the liver without the need for bile or lipases providing fuel for the brain and body.

  • Supports healthy blood sugars and helps to reduce insulin resistance.

  • Anti-microbial and anti-fungal properties. The caprylic (C8), capric (C10), and lauric (C12) acids found in MCT oil have been shown to reduce the growth of yeast and bacteria [4].

  • Most MCT oils on the market are made up of a combination of caprylic (C8), capric (C10), and lauric (C12) medium-chain fatty acids.

  • Why I use C8 MCT's: consist of almost 100% pure caprylic acid which is more quickly converted to energy compared to C10 and C12 yielding a quick and powerful boost to energy and mental clarity [5].

Caramel Bulletproof Coffee Ingredients

Makes 1 serving


8-12 oz Organic Fair Trade Brewed Coffee

1 tsp-1 Tbsp MCT oil

1 tsp-1 Tbsp Brown Butter Ghee


How to Make Caramel Bulletproof Coffee


1. Brew the coffee to your preference (IMO, pour over is the best!)


2. Pour about 4 ounces of coffee into your mug.


3. Add the MCT oil and brown butter ghee.


4. Using a frother, whip the coffee until foamy.


5. Top off with more coffee and enjoy!

FAQs


Q: Can you use grass-fed butter to make bulletproof coffee?

A: Yes, it won't be Paleo if you use grass-fed butter because it contains milk solids, and it won't have that rich caramel-y taste, but knock your socks off!


Q: How do I froth my bulletproof coffee if I don't have a frother?

A: I would recommend investing in a frother if you plan on having bulletproof coffee on the regular, however, if you don't have one, you can always use your blender. I just like the frother because I like my coffee piping hot and I find that it cools a lot in the blender.


Q: Is coconut oil the same as MCT oil?

A: Coconut oil and MCT oil have similar properties but they are not exactly the same. MCT oil contains a concentrated amount of medium chain fatty acids where as coconut oil only has about 10-20% MCT's.
